1. More than one pair of trainers. And at least one that is up from your regular size is recommended. Your feet will probably swell at some point, especially if it’s hot!
2. Real food. Sports nutrition is excellent for single-day stuff, but your body will need some decent hot meals with varied nutrients to keep you healthy and help with recovery over multi-day events.
3. A well-stock first aid kit. Blisters are inevitable, and so are stomach issues, muscle and ligaments strains and chaffing! Make sure you have everything you might need for covering 262 miles.
4. Hydration tablets. Make sure your favourite electrolyte tablets are with you and that you have tried and tested them during training. We love precisionhydration.com for their personalised sweat-testing and tablets.
5. Good tunes. Music can really lift your mood, so make sure you have a few decent playlists downloaded to turn to when you really need it.
6. Calf guards. Shin Splints are really painful and can even stop your race, so give your lower legs some extra support by wearing calf guards when you are running.
7. A tested daily recovery routine. Running ten marathons is super tough on your body, so ensure that you make it as easy as possible by getting the most out of your recovery time. Recovery shakes, elevating your legs, ice baths, compression tights and boots. Whatever works for you.
8. A solid run/walk plan. Running ten marathons is very different from running one, and it’s unlikely you will be able to hit your regular pace throughout the whole ten marathons. Find a good run/walk/jog plan that keeps you ticking off the miles without getting injured, and make sure you stick to it.
9. A very good reason for when things get tough. Are you doing this for charity or in memory of someone special? Whatever your reason is, make sure it’s a good one that will keep you on track and ticking off those miles.
10. A positive attitude. Even the most experienced ultra athletes sometimes struggle, so be prepared to have some low moments. Make sure you have some upbeat buddies to call or listen to an inspirational podcast or audiobook during these moments, and they will pass.
